Class agenda

This full day watercolor workshop teaches you everything you need to know to paint loose and expressive floral still life reminiscent of old Dutch oil paintings.

We will start our class by arranging fresh flowers as painting subjects. Then we will get acquainted with the watercolor medium by practicing a number of fundamental washes and exercises. 

Next, Ina will teach you a unique method of painting floral subject that results in a fresh yet substantial feel, painted with suggestive and bold brushworks. We will conduct a few painting exercises to study the form of individual flowers. 

Lasty, we will compose the floral arrangement on paper, and work our way through the final painting. We will be taking the time practicing specific forms on spare sheets of paper, before committing to the final piece. 

Prerequisites:

This is a beginner friendly class and no prior experience with watercolor medium is necessary. However, students should have some foundational drawing skill that allows you to sketch an object in real life on paper. However, the class format allows students to arrange the flowers based on their experience and comfort level. For beginner painters, painting a single or simple arrangement will ensure a more confident learning experience.  

Materials

Class cost includes paper and flower arrangements. Students are to bring the following supplies: 

  • Brushes - 1 large round quill brush of ~0.5” in diameter for applying wash, 1 small round brush ~0.125” in diameter, or rigger brush for finer details
  • Palette, doesn’t matter how many wells, as long as it has generous mixing area
  • 2B or softer pencil, eraser
  • Watercolor paint set with the following colors: Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, White gouache
  • Rag or old towel for soaking up water
  • Cup or jug for water
  • (Optional) easel or painting surface
