Istanbul is one of my fondest travel memories. Aside from its famous landmarks, the back streets of the old town Sultanahmet have its own allure: Built on hills, these narrow streets and old buildings created a multi-tiered, mezzanine-like formation; The juxtaposition of the tradition and the modern living can be observed from the city's many rooftop cafes. In this painting, I aimed to capture the vibe of the lunch break at an Istanbul street corner, with cars driving at all directions, and different characters going about their day, all woven together with these big shapes of light and dark amongst the buildings.
