7/26-7/27 Beginner plein air painting workshops in Bainbridge, WA
A beginner friendly outdoor sketching course
Ever wondered how to get started painting outdoors and take advantage of the beautiful summer weather? This 2-part watercolor painting course will help you overcome the fear of painting “en plein air” and a few different ways you can “warm up to your subject” before completing a finished scene in your sketchbook. You will receive personalized guidance and instruction on location, helping you capture the essence of your subject while leaving out the distracting details, so you can work efficiently and confidently out in the weather.
Curriculum overview:
- Class 1 - We will meet at BARN's Printmaking studio and kick off the class by learning a few different methods to “warm up to the subjects”. Students will then move outside, pick their painting spots on the BARN campus and start sketching. I will float around and provide personalized guidance for each student. In this class, the emphasis is on drawing the forms and capturing the dark shapes of the subject.
- Class 2 - We will meet at BARN's upstair great room. This time the students will learn about how to apply colors to their subjects – and develop a composed scene based on the studies from last class.

A rare opportunity that yields real learning
Most art classes are taught indoors and follow a fixed, step-by-step process dictated by the teacher. But when it comes to learning classical paintings, especially outdoors or on-location, the real breakthrough happens when you learn how to observe, edit, and distill the subject as you see it in the real world. This skill is what truly sets you free from following other people’s formulas—and propels your work to the next level. For many of us who aren't professional artists, this means you get to enjoy your practice way more and much sooner than those who are following instructions verboten.
Ina Xi is an award-winning landscape painter and educator based on the Kitsap Peninsula. Her painting workshops emphasize building core skills through hands-on, failure-based learning. Rather than just copying demos, students are encouraged to experiment—repeating the essential cycle of failing, observing, and adjusting—with supportive guidance that helps them gain confidence and develop their own artistic voice.
This is a location-specific art workshop with limited spots available. While it offers a powerful one-time immersive experience, advancements in the watercolor painting domain happen only when you routinely practice your craft.
