Learn the fundamentals of watercolor painting techniques and have a couple hours of fun learning new art skills and painting a vibrant alpine scene of the Mt. Rainier National Park.

In this workshop, we will open up with introduction to the watercolor medium, practice mixing and applying different paint consistencies, which will take up to 40 minutes of the class. And for the next 60-80 minutes, we will move onto drawing and painting the Mt. Rainier scene from beginning to end.

As different from most "Paint by the number" or "Paint & Sip" events, this beginner friendly watercolor painting workshop teaches fine art principals at an accessible format, by a professional artist. During the class, you will not only be able to follow along step-by-step, but understand the intention behind composition, color mixing and painting execution. You will also receive 1:1 coaching and feedback to help you troubleshoot and improve your techniques. Most people walk away with a satisfying painting, feeling inspired with the possibilities of pursuing watercolor painting as a hobby.

Cost includes all necessary supplies. Feel free to bring your favorite supplies if you already have a practice in watercolor.
Tracing paper available to help those who don't feel comfortable drawing the scene freehand.

ATTN: Although this workshop doesn't require prior experience, it is however quite involved and thus not ideal for young children. Please contact ina@inaxi.design prior to booking the workshop for your kids.

About the instructor

Ina Xi is a plein air painter and art educator whose work explores themes of nostalgia, travel and collective human experiences.

Despite her recent transition from corporate roles into the art career, Ina has gained regional and international recognition for her work. She was the 1st Place winner of 2024 Northwest Watercolor Society International Open, the 1st Place winner of Parklane Gallery Smallworks Winter Show, and the Emerging Artist Award winner of 2025 CVG Annual Show.

Gig Harbor is the quintessential seaside that offers countless painting opportunities. As a local plein air watercolor painter, I have spent numerous hours sketching, painting, and simply soaking in the beauty of Gig Harbor. However, there has been a void of accessible fine art education and experience, due to a number of galleries closing down in the downtown area.

I started this series of painting workshop with one goal in mind – offering accessible, high-quality art education in the heart of downtown where more people can get a jumpstart in their art journey and learn how to capture the beauty in our region.

The format:
You can expect a friendly and a safe space to learn the fine art principle. There is no "rules" or "the right way to do things", only practical advises and hands-on exercises to help you observe and learn from your own mistakes, and explore your strength and style – while having fun.

Class size:
Small and personal, capped at 8 people to ensure each student receives plenty of individual coaching and prompt feedback.

Duration
Two full hours, including an introductory warm-up exercise and a guided painting session that builds on those skills.

Cost
$60 per person, including all supplies—so you can simply show up and paint without investing in materials you don’t know if you will use again

Class schedule:
Unless otherwise noted, classes are scheduled to occur on the 3rd Thursday evening of each month, except for summer months. However, you can always schedule on-demand classes with me for a reasonable fee (scroll down to learn about it)
