Class agenda

This intensive 2-day workshop teaches the fundamentals of composition and painting design by using watercolor as a tool for studying and simplifying shapes and values, and turning “challenging” photos into dynamic, thoughtfully designed compositions.

As a student you are also invited to submit your own reference photos as case studies for the class, so that you get to learn tangible methods and ideas of bringing the subjects you’re passionate about into life.

  • Day 1 agenda - We will learn the principles of composition through a variety of photo examples. Then, we will learn the fundamental washes of watercolor and conduct a number of tonal studies with this medium.
  • Day 2 agenda - We will learn the key skills of converting a tonal study into a colored version. Then, the students can choose to work on either more studies or paint one of their studies again in color.

Materials

BARN supplies paper but not other painting and drawing tools. Please bring the following:

  • Brushes - 1 large round brush of ~0.5” in diameter for applying wash, 1 small round brush ~0.125” in diameter, or rigger brush for finer details
  • Palette, doesn’t matter how many wells, as long as it has generous mixing area
  • 2B or softer pencil, eraser
  • Watercolor paint set with the following basic colors: Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine Blue, Alizirin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red
  • Rag or old towel for soaking up water
  • Cup or jug for water
  • (Optional) easel or painting surface
